Christmas is here early. We just bought a new toy– Radiopopper, which is similar to the well-known PocketWizard! Can’t wait till it to get here so we can try even cooler things with off camera flash techniques!

We are already using the techniques with our master and slave flash units made by Canon. However, we have ran into a lot of issues. Since the flashes communicate with each other through infrared signals, the range is quite limited. Also, if a person or an object is in the way preventing the flashes from “seeing” each other, forget it!! Most of the time, it doesn’t work even just across a dance floor. You can safely say it was pretty unreliable.

Radiopopper eliminates these problems by converting infrared signals into radio signals. With it attached to our flashes, we can pretty much place the slave unit anywhere, behind people, around corners, under tables, etc and it will fire every time. Also, the range will increase from 40 feet to 600 feet, according to reviews from other photographers. Although I can’t image why we would ever need to shoot something from 600 feet away…HAHAHA!

So why go through all the trouble to use an off-camera flash? Why not just leave the external flash in the hot shoe on top of the camera? Well, that would be the easy way out. However, the images would not come out very flattering. In most cases they will be flat, dull and boring. With off camera flash, depending on how it’s used, the images could come out super dramatic! Here are a few images we’ve shot with off camera flash without the Radiopopper…when it decided to work
